Opposite Loves

“Alter thy adversary and thou shall
Be free.” These words, spoken within the moirĂ©
Confines of Jeanie’s bottle, trace the ripples & whorls
Decadent of her furniture,
Echoing revelations come as quickly as
Forgotten,
Graver declarations met in broken glass,
Hours etched in scintillas, in joyful
Iniquity.
Jeanie, “the meddler, busybody,”
King Solomon in the flesh has condemned
Lastingly to suffer the pantomime of repeated
Manumission.
No mind, makeshift
Order, or natural
Propensity can quit her of the perpetual
Questioner, fool and master.
Rest assured, Jeanie,
Soon your sentence will end.
‘Til then, thank you for waiting
Untold millennia to bring us this barnacle
Vessel, caching the correspondence of
War salt-riddled from sunken
Xanadu, where even ageless genies shall recover complete
Youth and
Zeal.

How to Fly a Djinn in Twenty-Four Hours

The speech that I’ve been rehearsing for years,
waiting for the opportunity to deliver in a moment of passion,
convincingly, is the speech I should've made to my younger self
when my younger self didn’t want to hear it.
“Jeanie,” I would say, “Don’t try to be the fastest gun in the East.
Fast guns break into dead runs. Hold your ground with no guns.”
Jeanie’s own philosophy was not normally of the Eastern persuasion.
An expanded horizon meant to her vacation in some exclusive resort.
Indeed her teachers had to resort to multi-colored mandalas, gilded sutras,
and other such visual aides to impress on Jeanie the wisdom of the Orient,
and even then she’d be suspicious of the source.
When it came to words of wisdom,
Jeanie preferred to give rather than take,
but who’d take the word of a genie?
I have my own reasons to doubt the grounds of her authority.
Squeeze into Jeanie’s bottle, and you’ll see shelves
laden with tomes of “self-help” from her past incarnations,
cracked spines and well-worn covers sporting titles such as
“Thick Face/Black Heart,” “Chicken Soup for the Djinn,”
and the classic, “How to Be a Genie in Ten Easy Lessons”
(she got her double-blink from that one).
I’d like to ask the her now, finally,
“If you’re willing to take the instruction of total strangers,
why not mine?” The way of the djinn
is littered with ersatz masters, as I to my grief have found.
Jeanie would never, not in a million years, have listened.
She’d take a new master over an old one any day.
Even if he were not the right one, at least she’d be assured
of having served the latest model. As for masters,
lest we forget, at their beckon there were blond genies
and brown genies, good and bad genies, maple genies, strawberry
genies, pretzel genies, glass, marble, and flesh and blood genies.

The Land of Tis For Naught

Highway 66 goes out there, its black stretch wavering in the noonday heat.
Geese and tortoise take the shortest route and cross--
the rest have not the imagination to do otherwise but follow its length,
one redundant mile after another, all the way to the end of the West.

The West ends at a truck stop in Corona del la Mare.
It’s a place where lemon trees grow by the highways,
and you can reach up to pick one anytime you want.

Truckers’ banter wafting on the warm breezes from the San Fernando Valley mingle with the hiss and grind of tractor trailers coming to rest in parallel diagonal rows. So here we must leave, Roland. It’s the end of our journey, not yours. There’s nothing for it but to roll your eyes to blue heaven, the one now permanently above.

Though you may have a nagging feeling you could have made better use of your wishes, they’ve all come true. As Alladin once found, one should never try to outsmart a genie. I who have made it my life’s study to identify and record sounds produced within the body can vouch that even the belly of a genie will sometimes lie. We are lucky after all to have our greatest feats of strength deemed in the nature of a wish and in sum...

much wishful thinking.
I content myself with counting the off-beats of your heart,
one to one one thousand, ten to ten one thousand,
before handing the stethoscope to my master, the doctor.

Coloring Contest

A message in a bottle can’t come nearly
fast enough for our seaside message-catchers.
Some stake out a spot by the shore at one AM,
some two AM the night before, some two nights before,
all for a chance to catch their own private message.
A rage for bottled messages sweeps across Babylon.
Children are put to bed wondering, “What will the one I get, say?”
The richest astronaut in the whole wide world finds
himself stranded on a chunk of the ring around Uranus.
He will reward one zillion black and white sesames
to the one who brings him a pipe wrench and pair of pliers
by Tuesday Greenwich mean time O-One-Hundred.
Too late to save the plutonium isolator, perhaps,
but not too late to fix the broken ventilator!
Three beeps by the escape hatch announce
the arrival of an intergalactic light-year-courier.
She needs last name and first initial
before handing over a ragged sock stuffed in a milk bottle.
There, between the rainbow dots and stripes
of a delightfully whimsical knit, the astronaut espies,
“You are delicious!”
His gums are spotted all over with sesames,
and I said, “I say, ‘Is there an extra genie in the house?’
Let me hear you say, ‘GENIE!’”
“GENIE!”
Say “GENIE!”
“GENIE!”
